Medical Insurance System in Korea and Its Influences on Hospitals/Christian Hospitals

Abstract
1. The Korean medical insurance system completed its goal of nation wide coverage by 1989 within the relatively short period of time of 12 years.
2. The quarreling has not yet ceased over the matter of claim review by the insurer. Physicians are complaining on the inconsistensy of review outcome, while the review committee also argues with the matter of over-treatment, /over medication
etc.
by
the medical service provider.
Physicians are not very happy with the present medical insurance system, because in actual operation of medical insurance, the insurers are interested only in low medical cost and easy access to medical care by the insured, while most physicians
are
more interested in the quality of medical care, eventually resulting in high medical cost.
3. Irrespective of whether it is a small sized private clinic or large sized general hospital, medical care providers are experiencing hardships in management problems, i.e financial instability, disputes with labor union.
Since the beginning of medical insurance, the work load for all medical staff has expanded enormously, nontheless the economic situations is worsening every year mainly because of the inappropriate low cost government policy.
4. For some time the amount of donations or gifts from churches or charity organizations either abroad or in-country has markedly decreased. However even under this present worse situation, Christian hospitals must commit themselves to continue
their
mission as good samaritans in Korea.
